Compass Young Adult Program

Program description
The Compass program serves young adults, age 18 to 30, who are having difficulty making the transition from adolescence to adulthood. This specialty hospital program is designed for persons who struggle with psychiatric or co-occurring disorders which have impaired their ability to successfully negotiate college, employment and other developmental stages that are associated with becoming an adult.

Compass staff provide a supportive and structured environment to address the specific needs of these young adults. Treatment team members work with the individuals to help them navigate from having difficulties with self-esteem to a position of self-worth and empowerment.

Compass provides guidance
Each young adult receives thorough medical, emotional, developmental and social assessments. The assessments help the treatment team integrate an appropriate blend of therapeutic interventions to meet the individual needs of the patient. In the event that hospital care or detoxification is required, Menninger will assist with admission to an appropriate local hospital in our network of providers.

Individualized treatment planning and treatment are essential to this program. A customized treatment plan allows each patient to capitalize on their strengths while they work on targeted symptoms among peers and with experienced clinical staff. The psychiatric, behavioral, life functioning or substance abuse issues that young adults face are treated while keeping the patient’s specific developmental milestones in mind.

The program integrates:

Family involvement
We recognize it can be very stressful to have a family member experiencing psychiatric illness and not know how to help. In working with families, we provide education about diagnoses and treatment options.

It also is important for the treatment team to understand the patient in the context of their family and its history. The patient’s primary clinician gathers a full family history from each patient.

In addition, the primary clinician keeps in touch with the family and referring professional about the patient’s progress and discharge planning to ensure as smooth a transition as possible for the patient’s return to family life.

Menninger also offers families an educational workshop.
