Eating Disorders Program

Treatment philosophy
The Eating Disorders Program aims to address the patient’s eating disorder, related medical problems and any coexisting psychiatric disorders so that the patient understands how to gain control of the eating disorder symptoms, weight and exercise level in a healthy way.

The team’s goal is to do all it can to help the patient. Eating disorders evolve over a period of time. It is unrealistic to expect a quick cure. Through treatment during the hospital stay, the staff assists the patient in learning what genetic, cultural and personal experiences and behaviors contributed to the cause of the eating disorder. Self-examination with the aid of the treatment team evolves into a process of continuing recovery. The more the patient invests in the process, the more the patient can accomplish while at Menninger.

Treatment addresses the whole person—medically, emotionally, socially and spiritually. This model of patient care supports The Clinic’s belief that patients come for treatment struggling with issues in several areas of their life. The breadth of experience and training represented on the treatment team enables the team to address the patient’s physical well-being, social and occupational functioning, interpersonal relationships, family environment and effects from events and experiences.

Understanding the whole person and how each area of the patient’s life affects the patient is crucial to achieving a diagnostic understanding and the development of the patient’s individualized treatment plan.
